1. Research the price. A price dramatically below comparable units can be bait for a deposit scam.
2. Speak with the seller. Ask why the unit is being sold, how long it has been owned, where it is stored, and whether the title is clear.
3. Verify the VIN. Compare the VIN on the trailer or motorhome with the title and available records.
4. Confirm ownership. The seller’s identity should reasonably match the ownership documents or documented authority to sell.
5. Never rely only on photos. Scammers frequently copy images and descriptions from legitimate advertisements.

Inspect the Toy Hauler

Inspect the unit in person or hire a qualified independent RV inspector. Pay special attention to:

• Roof, walls, ceilings, seals, and floors for leaks or soft spots;
• Frame, axles, suspension, brakes, tires, and hitch components;
• Ramp door, hinges, cables or springs, garage floor, and tie-down points;
• Generator, fuel station, batteries, electrical system, plumbing, tanks, and appliances;
• Slide-outs, leveling equipment, awnings, air conditioners, and exterior damage;
• Signs of repairs, mold, corrosion, fire, collision, or pest damage.

Safer Payment Practices

• Do not send gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment through an unfamiliar link to reserve an unseen unit.
• Be cautious of overpayment schemes, fake checks, and requests to forward money to a transporter.
• Use a secure, documented payment method appropriate for a high-value transaction.
• If escrow is necessary, independently verify the provider using contact information you found yourself—not information supplied only by the other party.
• Use a written bill of sale and obtain properly completed title documents.

Meeting Safely

• Tell another person where you are going and bring someone when possible.
• Meet during daylight in a reasonable public or business location when practical.
• Do not carry unnecessary cash.
• Do not enter an unsafe location or continue if the circumstances unexpectedly change.

Warning Signs

• The seller refuses a live call, current photo, VIN verification, or inspection.
• The unit is supposedly in another location with a shipping agent.
• The seller creates urgency around an immediate deposit.
• Messages contain inconsistent names, locations, prices, or vehicle details.
• A buyer offers more than the asking price and asks the seller to refund or forward the difference.
• Someone asks for a verification code, account password, banking login, or copy of sensitive identity documents.
